Definition of self-esteem.

In an article on aboutourkids.org called “How to Raise Girls with Healthy Self Esteem” there is a fantastic definition of self-esteem that I think really matters in how we can find a perspective on this epidemic.

The author states:

Self-esteem is related to how we feel about ourselves: it’s not just how we look but how we feel about how we look. And it’s not just how successful or smart others say we are, but how confident we feel about our talents and abilities.

How can you encourage someone’s talents and abilities today? How can you help them FEEL that they are worth something? Its all in the details, letting them know how their personality trait affected you!

You can tell a friend how their creativity inspired you. You can tell your little sister that her smile lights up a room (even with braces). You can write a note to you math partner explaining that you couldn’t have done the project without her. There are many small ways to encourage one another, and each one helps to change perspective on our value as people.

Go out an encourage someone today!

A powerful message. These are personal stories. This is why we need to invest in loving people for who they are.

How do you start the first post at the beginning of an initiative that you hope will change lives? It’s a pretty tall order, and so is the idea. I guess that is where I should begin - the birth of this idea. I had a fantastic life growing up, with supportive and affectionate parents, loyal friends and family, good grades and a healthy appetite for adventure…so how did I end up with a distorted self image?
There are numerous things I could blame it on: The media, the pornography industry, the phenomenon of the celebrity or the general busyness of life. In reality it was probably everything combined, so it’s not fair to pin it on any of these specifically. But there is one thing I know for sure. Something has to change, and instead of trying to change the multi-billion dollar industries around us, I believe we need to start focusing on individual lives.
My goal with IMAGE180 is to change the way we view ourselves. A place to grow perspective and encourage people to invest in the lives of others. Because ultimately investing in others leads to a cycle of love and healing. Seeing the power of this cycle changes the way we view ourselves, and it is my dream that it will cause each of us to look in the mirror and see who we really are - a people created to love and be loved - and realize we are worthy, precious, beautiful and loved just as we are.
